Cinnamon Challah French Toast with Caramelized Strawberries and Pears

I am a lover of challah bread.  I am a lover of cinnamon french toast.  The strawberries and pears was just my way of sticking to the WWW.SHEGOTFLAVOR.COM over the top intense flavoristic vibe!!  I only use challah bread for my french toast, mainly because of it’s texture and sweetness (it is also great for bread pudding OMG).  Whenever I buy a loaf of challah bread, I take a big smell because it smells so heavenly.  My husband and I both love the cinnamon french toast at Silver Diner.  So of course, I had to recreate and tip the scale on my own french toast at home!!  So many dishes seem unattainable at home but once you try it you see WOW, I can do this at home!!  This really is a 1 – 2 – 3 recipe.  Hope you enjoy it and make it often!  Enjoy, Enjoy and one more Enjoy!

Love me some sweet challah bread!

YES! Flavorful Custard, pour it all in BABY! Let it soak let it soak let it soak!

1 small loaf of challah bread
5 beaten large eggs
1 cup whole milk
4 tbsp. honey
4 tbsp. brown sugar (added to French toast custard)
2 tbsp. vanilla extract
Cinnamon (to taste)
Nutmeg (to taste)
Granulated sugar (to taste)
4 tbsp. unsalted butter (to cook French toast)
3 strawberries per slice of French toast (halved)
6 slices of pear per slice of French toast
4 tbsp. unsalted butter (to caramelize fruit)
4 tbsp. brown sugar (to caramelize fruit)


  1. Slice challah bread (custard mixture will make 6-8 slices of French toast) and set aside
  2. In a flat baking dish whisk together the eggs, milk, honey, light brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg to create  your custard mixture
  3. Add slices of challah bread to custard mixture (flip bread on both sides to ensure all of the bread is covered in the custard) and set aside to soak up all that custard love for 5-10 minutes
  4. Add unsalted butter to large skillet pan over medium heat until melted
  5. Add custard soaked challah slices to skillet pan and allow to cook for about 5 minutes on each side or until beautiful brown color (check every 2 minutes to ensure you do not burn)
  6. Sprinkle French toast with granulated sugar on both side while hot
  7. Now let’s make the caramelized strawberries and pears
  8. Clean strawberries and pears
  9. Peal pears and cut off tops of strawberries
  10. Slice 3 strawberry halves per slice of French toast and 6 slices of pealed pear per slice of French toast
  11. Add unsalted butter to small skillet pan on medium heat until melted
  12. Add brown sugar to melted butter
  13. Add strawberries and pears and allow to cook for about 2-3 minutes (you don’t want the fruit mushy
  14. Spoon the butter and sugar on top of fruit as caramelizing
  15. Pour caramelized fruit over French toast
  16. Optional:  Sprinkle with confectionate sugar

I made this for the fam 2 Saturdays ago. When I brought the Challah bread in the house my wife was like, “You’re not gonna try to cook something again are you? Well, I suppose you can’t mess up bread.” LOL. Much to her surprise it turned out great. The litmus test was my notoriously finicky kids. Not only did they enjoy it but they even asked for more! I’m going to give the grits & Italian sausage a shot this weekend in celebration of my wife’s birthday. Thanks for the inspiration and great recipes Utokia.

This is a great anytime meal. I love the mix of strawberries and pears and I would even have it as an dessert. This is what I’ll be serving for Sunday Brunch with my Mother’s Day family and friends!!! Here’s to “She’s Got Flavor” Who’s always serving up great flavor in your home!!
